Kimberley adventures
“I have one, I have one Monique!” I hear Rene calling from the river bank. With the camera I hurry down to find him with his hand line - towing a fish out of the water. As soon as he has the fish on the river bank a 2m croc comes just behind him. What a surprise! The croc was waiting all the time close to us and now we know why - he wants our fish! But it is the first fish Rene caught and he won’t give it away and run. But the freshie is quicker and under the “click, click” of the camera he goes for it. No way to get the fish back - no diner. With hook and lure and everything - the fish’s gone and the croc out of the water. That is what we wanted him to do all the time. But not in this way!
With a smiling and a crying eye we drive back to our tent, which is pitched on a beautiful campground above Lake Argyle. A place of magic moments - the water of the swimming pool drops down the escarpment into the stunning scenery overlooking the lake with it’s rocky surroundings. One of the nicest spots we have ever seen and definitely the worst one for fishing!
Within the last days, before we arrived at the lake, we had heavy showers and still very humid, hot weather. Now the climate changed and “The Dry” is on. We are so happy about that! Now there’s a chance that roads will dry up to let us pass. Our plan is, to get into Purnululu NP - the Bungle Bungle. What seemed to be impossible so far is now reality: on May 31st we are on the way in. It is still a bit rough and sandy - sharp rocks are scattered over the road. All muddy pads are dried up to let us through. But the “highlights” are waiting always at the end: two deep water crossings we have to deal with.
The water is just half a metre high but this is the absolute border for our bikes! Nearby the first crossing is a little forest. We decide to try to get the Yamaha first through the muddy terrain. Some minutes later the wheels are digging deep into the mud. Too deep. We can’t manage it to pull or push the bike out. The bike’s stuck. Soon stops a car and with helping hands (means another two people) we get the bike through. But there’s still the Honda waiting to cross. Rene is driving her through - but the water is getting over the wheels. A wonder that the motor sucked no water! With applause he parks the bike and we go further to the second, deeper crossing.
Before we reach that one, a farmer’s stopping to give us a hand to get trough the water. He walks it trough to find the best way and him and Rene push the Yamaha through - with engine help. Short before reaching the other side the rear tyre gets into soft sand and is digging deeper and deeper. Until the rear lights the bike is under water. A bit deeper and the motor will suck the wet. With three of us we can push it out of the hole and manage it to get the Honda over. Done! Without the help we would have given up - but there was no way to give up. They all wanted us to get into the Bungles. So - here we are! After 5 hrs for 60km’s and high concentration we reach the campground.
The next day we spend to explore the corrugated, sandy road winding into the strange formations of sandstone. We hike through 200m high gorges and we are impressed by colours, shapes and pure nature! After a walk into Echidna Casm - that’s meant to be the journey to the centre of the world with its 200m high walls standing 1m apart - we find it was really worth the trip.
After that adventure we have seen enough dirt roads and decide to go on bitumen straight to Broome as we see the deep sand on the way to Windjana Gorge. We had a very adventurous start in WA and we wait for what’s coming next...
